About the programme

The Hague Academy of International Law, based at the Peace Palace in The Hague, will offer its 2027 Winter Courses online as well as in person. The online session runs from 11 to 29 January 2027. Registered attendees follow the courses in webinar format through Zoom and the Academy's e-learning environment.

This is the online session only. The in-person Winter Courses at the Peace Palace are a separate registration.

Programme

  • Only the morning courses are offered online.
  • Lectures are in English or French, with simultaneous translation into the other language.
  • The programme consists of a General Course and a series of Special Courses.
  • Attendees can follow three 50-minute lectures per day, Monday to Friday, across the three weeks.
  • Afternoon lectures and activities are not available to online participants.

Courses and lecturers (2027 online poster)

  • Inaugural Lecture: International Law: a Constitution or a Gentle Civiliser of National Interest?, Danilo Türk, Emeritus Professor at the University of Ljubljana.
  • General Course: International Law as a System of Claims, Pierre d'Argent, Professor at the Université catholique de Louvain (delivered in French, interpreted into English).
  • New Developments in International Law, in Particular in the Law of the Sea, in Relation to Sea-Level Rise, Bogdan-Lucian Aurescu, Judge at the International Court of Justice (delivered in French, interpreted into English).
  • Territory in International Law: Statehood, Natural Resources, and Human Rights, Ingrid Brunk, Professor at Vanderbilt Law School.
  • Cosmopolitanism in International Law, Olivier de Frouville, Professor at the University Paris-Panthéon-Assas (delivered in French, interpreted into English).
  • Abuse of Process before International Courts and Tribunals, Serena Forlati, Professor at the University of Ferrara.
  • Private International Law through the Lens of Non-Discrimination, Dulce Lopes, Professor at the University of Coimbra.
  • International Investment Law: a Chinese Perspective, Wenhua Shan, Senior Professor and Dean of the Law School at Xi'an Jiaotong University.

Daily timetable and recordings

  • Live broadcast from 09:20 hrs, The Hague time (GMT+1), which is 1:50 pm IST.
  • 09:20 - 10:10: Special Course
  • 10:30 - 11:20: Special Course
  • 11:40 - 12:30: General Course

The first day starts later and includes the Opening Speech of the Secretary-General; the last day ends slightly later with the Closing Speech. Each daily session can be watched live on Zoom or later as a recording, made available at the end of each course day in the e-learning environment. Each recording stays accessible for five weeks after its broadcast and is then permanently deleted.

Admission and eligibility

The Academy states that registration is open to all interested applicants. As the number of places is unlimited, the Academy does not make any selection. Applicants from India may register.

Fee

  • Registration fee: EUR 475.
  • There are no Academy scholarships available for the online session.
  • The registration fee is neither refundable nor transferable to another person.
  • Registration is automatically confirmed on receipt of payment.

Certificate

The Academy does not monitor attendance for the Online Winter Courses. At the end of the session a certificate of enrolment (not a certificate of attendance) is issued to participants, by email only; it cannot be provided in paper format.

E-learning environment and technical requirements

An e-learning environment opens from December to all registered participants through their Academy profile, with readings recommended by the professors. Some professors' presentations may be added at the beginning or end of the programme. Participants need a good internet connection and speakers; a microphone and webcam are not required. Zoom login details are sent a few days before the session starts.

How to apply

Create an Academy account (or log in) on the Academy website, then fill out the Online Winter Courses registration form and pay the fee. Registration closes on 3 January 2027 at 23:59 hrs (GMT+1), which is 4:29 am IST on 4 January 2027.
