The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is inviting applications through the UN Internship Programme for an intern with the Secretariat of the Group of Human Rights Experts on Nicaragua (job opening 286081, level I-1). The Group was established by the Human Rights Council on 31 March 2022 to investigate all alleged human rights violations and abuses committed in Nicaragua since April 2018, including their possible gender dimension, and to provide guidance on justice and accountability. It is composed of three independent experts and is supported by a Secretariat of United Nations officials based in Panama City.
The intern works under the general guidance of the coordinator of the Secretariat and the direct supervision of different Secretariat members.
Applicants must meet one of these academic criteria:
A background in law, political science, international relations, communication studies or a related field is preferred. No professional work experience is required, but a field of study closely related to the internship is. Applicants should have a marked interest in the Latin American / Central American region. Knowledge of international human rights law and/or international criminal law is desirable. The posting carries no nationality restriction; it notes that interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country of the internship may need a visa and work authorisation.
Fluency in Spanish and a working knowledge of English are required. Good drafting skills in both Spanish and English are desirable.
