About the Placement

The International Criminal Court (ICC) invites applications for Visiting Professional placements in Chambers (Organisational Unit: Chambers, Judiciary), Requisition ID 24227, at its seat in The Hague. Chambers, comprising the Appeals, Trial and Pre-Trial Divisions, is in charge of judicial proceedings for crimes under the jurisdiction of the Court: issuing decisions and orders, responding to motions of the parties and participants, holding status conferences and hearings, and analysing evidence.

The vacancy announcement is used to give hiring managers a list of suitable candidates from which they may make selections throughout the year, so applicants must state their availability when applying.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • In-depth legal research and analysis of questions of international criminal law, public international law, international humanitarian law and human rights law, and of relevant international and national legal materials.
  • Legal advice on the interpretation and application of the Court's documents.
  • Summaries of evidence material, submissions and decisions.
  • Assisting in the drafting of decisions.

Eligibility

  • A degree in law or a relevant legal qualification from a recognised university, demonstrating very good knowledge of international or national criminal law, comparative law and criminology, public international law, international humanitarian law or human rights, with a very good record of academic performance.
  • At least 3 (three) years of relevant professional experience. Candidates with less than three years of experience are not eligible for a Visiting Professional placement but may apply for an internship.
  • Proficiency in English or French (the Court's working languages); working knowledge of the other is desirable, and Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish is an asset.
  • Ability to work in multicultural and multilingual environments, strong teamwork, very good oral communication and drafting skills, and good computer and research skills.
  • Indian applicants: the ICC states that, unless otherwise specified in the vacancy, candidates from non-State Parties are eligible to apply for a visiting professional placement. This vacancy specifies no nationality restriction. Nationals of non-represented and under-represented countries are encouraged to apply.
  • A child or sibling of an ICC staff member is not eligible.

Duration and Remuneration

  • Visiting professionals work full time for between three (minimum) and six months, agreed before commencement; placements are not extended beyond six months. The vacancy lists the contract duration as 6 months.
  • The placement is unfunded: the ICC provides no remuneration and no reimbursement of expenses incurred before, during or after the placement. Applicants must be able to support themselves for the entire duration.
  • Under the ICC Administrative Instruction on the Visiting Professionals Programme, a certificate confirming the placement is issued on successful completion of a placement of at least one month.
