The Centre for International Law (CIL) at the National University of Singapore is hosting Fossil Fuel Feuds at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), a webinar in its Distinguished Speaker Series, on Thursday, 29 October 2026, from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm Singapore time (1:30 pm to 3:00 pm IST), on Zoom.
The ICJ's Advisory Opinion on the Obligations of States in Respect of Climate Change identifies fossil fuel production, licensing and subsidisation among the activities to which international climate change obligations apply, and suggests that such activities may constitute internationally wrongful acts. The lecture analyses the Advisory Opinion and the proceedings leading up to it, including the scientific and legal background that brought fossil fuel production and subsidies into the case, the Court's reasoning, its jurisprudential advances and limitations, and the potential impacts of the Opinion.
The webinar is held online on Zoom through NUS's public webinar registration form, which asks for the participant's country. Students, researchers and practitioners in international, environmental and climate law will find it relevant.
