Call for Papers: One-Day National Seminar on Ancient Indian Jurisprudence and the Modern Judicial System at Kamkus College of Law, Ghaziabad [12 September 2026; Offline]

The one-day national seminar is organised by Bhagirath Sewa Sansthan, Ghaziabad and the Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit Sansthanam, Lucknow (Government of Uttar Pradesh), and is being held at Kamkus College of Law, Ghaziabad.

Kamkus College of Law was established in 2007 and is managed by Bhagirath Sewa Sansthan, a society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The college is located at B-Block, Sector 23, Sanjay Nagar, Ghaziabad, is affiliated to Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, and its courses are approved by the Bar Council of India. The Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit Sansthanam was established on 31 December 1976 to preserve, promote and develop the Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit languages and their literatures, and its office is at Girdhar Bhawan, Rai Bihari Lal Marg, Naya Hyderabad, Lucknow.

The seminar carries the main theme "Ancient Indian Jurisprudence and the Modern Judicial System: The Relevance of Sanskrit Literature in the Contemporary Perspective". It seeks to bridge the wisdom of ancient Indian jurisprudence, rooted in the principles of Dharma, Sadachara, equity and justice and documented across Sanskrit literature, classical treatises and regional texts, with the mechanisms of the modern judicial system.

The organisers note that texts such as the Manusmriti, the Yajnavalkya Smriti, Kautilya's Arthashastra and the Mimamsa Sutras contain nuanced principles on law, governance, civil rights and the justice system. The objective is to bring modern legal experts, law students and Sanskrit scholars onto a single platform to analyse how those principles can contribute to today's judicial system, and to evaluate how concepts such as Dharma, Vyavahara and Sadachara can inform contemporary legal challenges, judicial ethics, alternative dispute resolution and constitutional values.

• Rajdharma and Modern Administrative Law: Kautilya's Arthashastra and the principles of good governance.
• Ancient methods of dispute resolution (ADR): the origin of arbitration, conciliation and the Panchayat system in Sanskrit texts.
• Law of contracts and civil law: references to debt, transfer of property and commercial rules in the Yajnavalkya and Narada Smritis.
• Environmental protection and law: environmental justice in Vedic and Puranic Sanskrit literature and its relevance to today's laws.
• Jurisprudence and rules of interpretation: the applicability of Mimamsa rules of interpretation in interpreting modern laws.

The sub-themes are not exhaustive, and papers may be submitted on other themes related to the main theme of the seminar.

Well-researched original and unpublished papers and case studies are invited from academics and scholars, researchers, the bar and the bench, non-state actors and students. The brochure lists the following categories:

• Students pursuing a three-year or five-year undergraduate degree in law.
• Students pursuing a one-year or two-year postgraduate degree in law.
• Research scholars.
• Academicians.
• Practising advocates.
• Judicial officers.
• Sanskrit scholars.

Abstract: 300 to 400 words, typed in Times New Roman font size 12 on A4 size paper with a 1 inch margin on all sides and 1.5 line spacing, using MS Word. At the top of the abstract the author must give the name, email ID, contact number and name of the institution.

Full paper: thematic and not more than 2,500 words, with 1,500 to 2,500 words appreciated. Same formatting as the abstract. Footnotes must follow a uniform Standard Indian Legal Citation (SILC) style. Authors should apply research skills and an appropriate research methodology, and must give the name, email ID, contact number and institution at the top of the paper.

Abstracts and full papers are to be sent to seminar.kamkus@gmail.com. Papers received after the stipulated deadline will not be entertained.

Registration opens on 5 August 2026 and closes as soon as the limit of 100 participants is reached; the brochure states that only 100 participants will be allowed to participate free.

• Professional or academician: Rs 600 for the first author and Rs 400 for a co-author.
• Researcher or student: Rs 500 for the first author and Rs 300 for a co-author.
• International delegates: USD 10.

The brochure records these as registration charges for publication, with participation itself free. Co-authors are also required to pay the registration fee. Participation includes lunch and evening high tea, and no TA or DA will be paid to participants.

All research papers will be scrutinised through a blind review by the Editorial Board, and selected papers may be published in book form with an ISBN number, published by Kamkus College of Law. The brochure states that there may be a maximum of five authors for one article, that is, one main author and four co-authors, although an earlier line in the same brochure says that only one co-author is permitted; intending authors should confirm the position with the organisers.

Certificates for actual participation and presentation will be issued after the completion of the event. No certificates will be issued to participants in absentia.
